How to make a split cross

Start with a peice of square stock (3/8", 1/2", 3/4" or 1")  Cut the blank as noted on the chart on this website.  The larger the stock, the more time the blank needs to soak in the fire.

Heat thoroughly, especially in the area of the overlapped cuts.  Evenly open up both sections of the cross.

Using various faces of the anvil open up the cross.

Flatten the cross.  If the cross is not square use the hardy hole or post vice to straighten the cross.  Use a ballpeen hammer to texture the cross.  Finish with bee's wax or lacquer (after the cross is cooled).
